U.S. and Palestinian Artists Bring Classic American Play to Local Arabic-speaking Audiences:
The Palestinian National Theater, Al-Hakawati, and the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem co-sponsored the Arabic-language production of Arthur Miller's classic play All My Sons, the theatre’s first-ever joint production with the Consulate. The management of Al-Hakawati chose All My Sons for its themes of accountability to family and society, war-profiteering, and materialism which the theater believes will find resonance with the Palestinian community.Renowned American director and actor Allen Nause came to Jerusalem to co-direct the play with the renowned Palestinian director, Kamel Pacha. Stacy Barrios the Consulate’s Cultural Affairs Officer, lent her talents to the production as choreographer. The play opened to a capacity crowd of nearly 300 Jerusalemites who commented that they personally related to the story, enjoyed learning about this era of American history, and appreciated the performers’ use of the Palestinian Arabic dialect.
The play ran for five nights in Jerusalem and will soon be traveling to Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Jericho for ten additional performances.
