American Corners Jericho

The American Corner in Jericho is located in the Jericho Municipal Library and was formally launched in August 2006.

Purpose of the American Corner

The American Corner aims to share the story of the United States and help individuals expand their general knowledge and skills, and understand American society, culture and values. The American Corner also aims to maintain an open dialogue on issues of mutual concern, and build bridges of understanding between the American and the Palestinian People.

Programs

In 2008 American Corner Jericho held 33 events. These events included semi-monthly screenings of American films, monthly discussions of American books, Ramadan celebrations, quiz events, thematic programming around U.S. commemorative events (e.g. Black History Month, Women’s History Month, etc.), a creative writing workshop for youth, an Earth Day-inspired clean-up, training for English language teachers, presentations by USG alumni, workshops for children in artistic expression, creative writing, and theatre, and English language classes (one focused on American culture and conversation, the other a more traditional language class offered for both 10-12 year olds and 16-18 year olds). The American Corner also hosts two English ACCESS Micro-scholarship classes and an AMIDEAST Educational Advising Corner, established in November 2007 during International Education Week.
