Reporting the Death of an American Abroad

Reporting the Death of a U.S. Citizen in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza

Death is a time of crisis for one's family and friends no matter where it takes place.  If the death occurs overseas, the experience can be even more traumatic, especially if the local procedures are not clearly understood.

If you need to report the death of a U.S. citizen abroad, please contact the Consulate before coming in.  We will arrange a private, quiet time for you to come in to discuss the situation, outside of normal (and sometimes hectic) public hours in the mornings.  To contact the Consulate regarding the death of an American, please e-mail us at
JerusalemACS@state.gov, or call ++972/(02) 622-7207, (02) 622-7214, or (02) 622-7227.

When you come to the Consulate, you will need to bring the original death certificate issued by the Israeli or Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior; proof that your relative was a U.S. citizen, such as a U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, or Certificate of Naturalization; and
(if possible) his or her social security number.  Please also complete and bring to the Consulate the completed form Report of the Death of an American Abroad - DS-2060.

Please note that social security-related questions must be addressed separately to the Federal Benefits Unit, which can be reached at JerusalemFBU@state.gov

The Consulate can issue between 10 and 20 death certificates, as per your request, free of charge.  Processing usually takes two weeks once all the forms are completed.
