Palestinian Women Artists Illustrate their Future through Cultural Envoy Program
March 13, 2008
March is Women’s History Month – join us here for more features:
Bringing together American and Palestinian art traditions, the U.S. Consulate General and the Palestinian Ministry of Culture launched a joint program to engage 15 Palestinian female artists in a month-long workshop with U.S. State Department Cultural Envoy and American artist Helen Zughaib. The workshops will explore the theme of Women’s Art, Women’s Vision, this year's Women's History Month theme, and will culminate in an exhibit of the artists’ work to open on March 13 in Ramallah.
Consul for Press and Cultural Affairs, Micaela Schweitzer-Bluhm and Deputy Minister of Culture Radwan Abu Ayyash celebrated the cooperative program during a visit to the working studio on February 26. Schweitzer-Bluhm highlighted that “Palestinian women have powerful voices that show through the vibrant art we see from Palestinian female artists.” For his part, Abu Ayyash applauded the opportunity for such a cultural exchange and encouraged the participants to make full use of the workshop to express the unique views and life experiences of Palestinian women through the work that they will create during the workshops.
Zughaib is working with the artists to use their art to tell their personal stories -- as she has done -- and to convey a vision of Palestinians as a people with a hope for the future. The Palestinian women come from across the West Bank.
