Consulate General Jerusalem Deepens Understanding of U.S. Electoral System in Palestinian Media
To enhance understanding of the U.S. election process in the local media, US Consulate General Jerusalem connected 10 senior Palestinian journalists from the West Bank and Gaza in a 3-way DVC with IIP speaker Hisham Melham, a prominent Arab-American journalist and U.S. correspondent for many Pan-Arab media outlets. During a 90-minute dialogue on February 14, Mr. Melham combined his authoritative knowledge of the topic with his profound understanding of the local audience and their backgrounds, addressing many issues that usually receive superficial coverage by the Palestinian media, such as the caucus and primary process, party politics, and the role of money in elections. The dialogue was received very favorably and increased journalists’ understanding of the electoral process. This better understanding will help local media reporting on the U.S. elections this year.
