MEPI Small Grants - Deadline Extended

Annually, the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem administers the MEPI small grants competition.

Palestinian civil society and private sector organizations in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem are invited to submit proposals that focus on the four MEPI pillars:

  • Political Reform
  • Economic Reform
  • Education Reform
  • Women’s Empowerment

We are looking for innovative, small projects that contribute toward grassroots capacity building and institutional development for civil society. Our goal is to help groups grow their membership by sharpening their message and activities, extend their outreach through publications and public programs, foster contacts with government officials (national and local), establish public-private partnerships, and support networking and resource/information sharing among NGOs.

MEPI small grants can:

  • Support local civil society, NGOs, women's groups, and professional associations involved in increasing the political space.
  • Encourage good governance programs that include anti-corruption and transparency components.
  • Promote the rule of law and legal reform, including raising public and professional awareness.
  • Encourage women's participation in public life at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • Expand programming for youth by providing practical opportunities to experience democracy in action, and contribute to their communities.

Proposals that involve youth, businesswomen, educators and rural leaders will receive priority. For example, ongoing projects in the West Bank and Gaza, funded with 2005 grants, focus on voter awareness among women, teacher development, citizen participation in democratic local government, and promoting economic development.

Other guidelines are as follows:

  • The project must be completed within a 12-month period.
  • Grant request must be in the $10,000-$25,000 range.
  • The budget should give priority to program-related activities or materials rather than salaries and administrate costs. Food and refreshments (including alcoholic beverages), entertainment, office rental and utilities, and construction costs cannot be funded.
  • In accordance with U.S. law, all signed grants will include a clause prohibiting transactions with organizations that support or are involved in terrorist activity.

Proposals must be submitted to the Public Affairs Section via e-mail to: mailto:usconsujerusalem@state.gov.

Please use the application format found at: http://mepi.state.gov/documents/organization/80553.pdf
