ACCESS Students Perform Sketches and Skit to Celebrate Achievements of Women and Minorities
One group put coordinated a quiz to test their peers’ knowledge about key figures in Women’s History
Approximately 100 students participating in the ACCESS English Language Micro-scholarship Program performed a series of skits and vignettes to display their language-skills and exhibit their creativity. Five groups of students, at varying levels of English-speaking proficiency, shared their stories of understanding and appreciation of key figures in both Palestinian and U.S. history. One story depicted Harriet Tubman re-telling the story of her life – from enslavement to freedom – in an interview format with “Oprah.” Other students performed upbeat skits that celebrated mothers and the accomplishments of famous women (of all colors and nationalities) throughout history. Public Diplomacy Officer Esperanza Tilghman spoke to each group of students (in Arabic and English), congratulating their progress and continued success in language-learning, and to commend them on their research in Palestinian and American histories. Cultural Affairs Specialist May Barghouthi joined in on the students’ role-play of other, Oprah-inspired interviews, complimenting them on improved language abilities.
