Summer Camp Stimulates Critical Thinking in Palestinian Youth
The “Extracurricular Enrichment Day Camp” opened its doors to 110 gifted Palestinian youth from West Bank public middle schools, ages 12-16 on June 13, 2009. Implemented by Al Quds University in Abu Dis and funded by the U.S. government, the camp seeks to stimulate critical-thinking, build self-confidence, and prepare participants for a future in higher education. Activities will include hands-on workshops in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and the environment. Students will also develop individual projects with the assistance of a mentor. Also included in the camp’s program are civic-education topics, aimed at fostering greater civic participation by youth in local communities. U.S. Consulate staff participated in the inaugural event of the five-week camp, which will run again for a second set of campers later this summer. Al Quds University students and faculty expressed their thanks to the U.S. Consulate General for its support and funding.
