Wayne State University Professor Conducts Creative-Writing Workshop Using Poetry and Hip-Hop to ACCESS Students in Jericho
Mr. Mike Liebler, an internationally known and widely published Detroit-based poet, university professor, literary arts activist and arts organizer, spoke to a group of thirty (30) ACCESS English-language students from Jericho in a creative-writing workshop that utilized traditional forms of poetry and verses of hip-hop. Mr. Liebler first presented the students with the Langston Hughes poem “A Dream Deferred,” and engaged them in an exercise that explored the sensory connections and perceptions expressed through the words of the poem. Mr. Liebler then played a portion of an American song that prompted a discussion of dreams and aspirations, and how to continue pursuing your dreams despite societal impediments. ACCESS teacher Mr. Ibrahim Dadle said that Mr. Liebler’s session was encouraging and stimulating, and hopes that Mr. Liebler will be able to conduct similar workshops with other ACCESS classes.
