U.S. Consulate Supports Al-Quds University’s Third Annual Science Summer Camp

June 14, 2010

Jerusalem: Al Quds University, in partnership with the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem, launched the science-based "Extracurricular Enrichment Camp" on Monday, June 14. The U.S. Consulate General has supported the summer camp, which provides promising Palestinian youth from Jerusalem and the West Bank the opportunity to study science in a university-campus environment, for three consecutive years.

Esperanza Tilghman, Public Diplomacy Officer for the U.S. Consulate General, and Dr. Hasan Dweik, Vice President for Academic Affairs for Al Quds University welcomed students, guests, faculty, and family members of the students. Ms. Tilghman highlighted the continued partnership between U.S. Consulate General and Al-Quds University, saying that the U.S. Consulate General "is committed to supporting programs that enhance science-education for Palestinian youth, and create a positive environment for them to succeed." Dr. Hasan Dweik thanked the U.S. Consulate General on behalf of Al-Quds University and the students and faculty of the science-camp for its continued assistance and commitment to enhancing access to extra-curricular activities for public-school students.

There are 110 students, between the ages of 12-16, from public intermediate schools participating in this year's summer camp. The camp will be divided into two four-week sessions, and is designed to stimulate critical-thinking, build self-confidence, and inspire students to pursue higher education. Activities will include laboratory and workshop activities related to biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, and environmental science. During the course of the program, students will independently create science projects under the guidance of a mentor. Additionally, students will also receive lessons in civic education to foster community activism. Students who attended the camp in previous years will serve as youth leaders during this year's camp.
