Statement by Special Envoy for Middle East Peace

January 30, 2009
UNRWA Compound, Jerusalem

I want to thank John Ging, Robert Serry, and Lana Abu Hijleh for their comprehensive briefing on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and for the significant efforts that are underway to deliver assistance to those in need.

I also want to thank UNRWA and CHF staff in particular for their dedication and commitment. And to thank other organizations and the Palestinian Authority for their work to channel assistance to the people of Gaza.

President Obama has expressed his deep concern about the recent loss of life and the substantial suffering in Gaza.

And I'm pleased to announce that, this week, the President directed the use of another $20.3 million to provide emergency food and medical assistance to the wounded and displaced in Gaza.

These funds are in addition to the nearly $40 million in ongoing U.S. support to the United Nations, ICRC, and non-governmental organizations for programs in Gaza since hostilities began in late December.

We will continue our efforts, in cooperation with others this region and elsewhere.

The tragic violence in Gaza and in southern Israel offers a sobering reminder of the very serious and difficult challenges and unfortunately the setbacks that will come.

It is important to consolidate a sustainable and durable ceasefire while addressing immediately humanitarian needs.

Then we must move forward --the United States remains committed to actively and aggressively seeking a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as between Israel and its other Arab neighbors.

Thank you all very much for being here.

My thanks again to John, Robert, and to Lana for the briefing that they gave me today.

Most importantly, for the work they are doing to meet the important needs that exist in Gaza, today.

Thank you all very much.
