U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem and Young Entrepreneurs of Palestine Invite Palestinian Girls to Attend Career Day in Al-Bireh

Press Release

April 19, 2007

Jerusalem

For Immediate Release

The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem, in cooperation with the Young Entrepreneurs of Palestine and Palestinian women from a variety of professional backgrounds, hosted a Career Day for girls on Thursday, April 19, at the new Red Crescent Society Building in Al-Bireh.  The event was intended to provide Palestinian young women with information about career opportunities available to them.

Approximately 150 female students from local high schools and colleges talked with successful role models from the Young Entrepreneurs of Palestine (YEP), the Business Women Forum (BWF), and women from many other sectors and institutions.  The women shared their experiences in the workplace and offered advice about possible educational and professional paths and career opportunities at local companies.  Representatives from the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem and AMIDEAST provided information on exchange opportunities to study and work in the United States.

The young women were welcomed to the Career Day event by a special video message from the U.S. Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy, Karen Hughes.  In her message Under Secretary Hughes said, “As young Palestinian women, you have a historic chance to create a better future for your country.”  She encouraged the young women to dream big and follow their passions and said they should “not to let [their] dreams be limited by circumstances or by the plans or expectations of others”

The students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions of successful Palestinian women about choosing schools and courses, extracurricular activities, developing job-specific skills, networking, writing a good CV, conducting a successful job interview, and balancing work with family and others aspects of life.  The event also provided an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to meet the next generation of potential employees or members.
