Transcript of Statement by Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Senator George Mitchell

Palestinian Authority Presidential Compound, Ramallah
June 10, 2009

I want to thank Mr. Erekat and President Abbas for their courtesy in meeting with us here today. We had a very good and a full and a frank discussion covering all of the issues that we’re now dealing with. From the standpoint of the United States, the President and Secretary of State have made our policy clear. The only viable resolution of this conflict is for the aspirations of both sides to be met through two states. Israelis and Palestinians have a responsibility to meet their obligations under the Roadmap. It’s not just their responsibility; we believe it’s in their interests as well. It’s also in the interests of all of those who seek to promote peace – Americans, Europeans, Arabs and others – to support this effort through tangible steps and actions. And we all share an obligation to create the conditions for the prompt resumption and early conclusion of negotiations. We’re now engaged in serious discussions with our Israeli, Palestinian, and other regional partners to support this effort. The United States is fully committed to working toward comprehensive peace throughout the Middle East. As President Obama said this week, “America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity and a state of their own.” Thank you all very much. Thank you.
