Press Statement of Senator George Mitchell Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Following meeting with Moroccan FM Taieb Fassi Fihri

April 16, 2009
Rabat, Morocco

I want first to thank the foreign minister and his Majesty for the continued close relationship between our governments and our peoples. The United States and Morocco have a history of friendship and cooperation in many important areas, and on this my third visit to the region, I wanted to come to Morocco on the first day as an expression of our recognition of that relationship, and the close working relationship that we’ve had. The President of the United States, Barack Obama, and the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have made clear that the objective of the United States in the region is a comprehensive peace, a resolution of all outstanding conflicts as soon as possible. In the case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we believe that the two-state solution, two states living side by side in peace, is the best and the only way to resolve this conflict, and we will be pursuing that objective in meetings that I will be having in other countries in the region over the next two weeks. And we hope very much that the outcome will be a period of peace and prosperity for all the people of the region. Essential to that will be the support of the government and the people of Morocco, and of other countries in the region, and I am grateful to the foreign minister for his constructive suggestions and for his willingness to engage in dialogue and discussion with us as we move toward that objective. Thank you all very much.
