American Studies Institute Programs
The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem announces
The 2010 Study of the United States Institute on National Security Policymaking
This six-week Institute on U.S. National Security is multi-disciplinary in its approach and examines the various historical, geographic, economic, cultural, and political factors involved in the making of U.S. national security policy. The Institute will be held at the University of Delaware in late January until the end of February 2010. It is fully sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Instruction will be in English.
The institute provides a group of 18 experienced and highly-motivated foreign university faculty and related professionals with a deeper understanding of the foundations and formulation of U.S. national security policy, with specific reference to American views on what constitutes basic U.S. national security and defense requirements and how those views have evolved in the post-Cold War era. Continuities and changes in U.S. national security policy are illuminated by examining how U.S. national security policy has dealt with specific areas of concern over time, for example nuclear proliferation, weapons of mass destruction, and combating international terror networks.
Eligibility of applicant:
- Experienced professional with little or no prior travel to the United States
- Seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into their institutions’ curricula, to develop new courses in the subject of the institute, to enhance and update existing courses on the United States, or to offer specialized seminars/workshops for professionals in U.S. studies areas related to the program theme.
- Willing to participate fully in an intensive post-graduate level academic program and study tour.
- Require excellent proficiency in English and outstanding qualifications, as these programs are extremely competitive.
- Mid-career, between the ages of 30-50, highly-motivated and experienced national security, university-level faculty or other professionals from institutions of higher education, or national security policymaking institutions, including national military academies, government ministries, and think-tanks.
