Information on Registering to Vote and Voting Outside the U.S.

The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act guarantees United States citizens overseas the right to vote in federal elections in the United States.  This legislation applies only to federal elections. However, many states in the United States have enacted legislation whereby certain categories of citizens residing overseas can vote by absentee ballot for state or local officials. The same procedures for obtaining local election ballots are used for obtaining federal election ballots.

The Consulate has information that can assist in registering to vote from abroad.  The Consulate has a supply of Federal Post Card Applications and a copy of the U.S. Government’s voting assistance guide, which provides instructions for completing the form.  Both documents can also be found by following this link to the Federal Voting Assistance Program website

For federal elections, the post card applications can be mailed free of charge from the Consulate.  However, please note that there are no voting facilities at the Consulate.
