In light of the potential for demonstrations over the next few days, employees of the Consulate General Jerusalem have been instructed to avoid Jerusalem's Old City and its surrounding areas, including Salah A'Din Street and Sultan Suleiman Street, from now until Saturday, August 5, 2006. As of Saturday morning, these restrictions on American personnel will no longer be in effect.

Employees are further advised to avoid crowds, maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness, and exercise caution in public places. Please ensure that you have your cellular telephone or radio and emergency contact numbers with you when traveling outside your home.

The Consulate General asks all U.S. citizens to read the State Department Travel Warning for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza dated July 19, 2006, which can be found at .

Americans in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are strongly encouraged to register with the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem through the State Department's travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov. U.S. citizens who require emergency services may telephone the Consulate General in Jerusalem at (972)(2) 622-7250. Current information on travel and security in Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank may be obtained from the Department of State by calling toll-free 1-888-407-4747 within the United States and Canada or, from overseas, a regular toll line, 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8 am to 8 pm Eastern Time Monday through Friday, except U.S. federal holidays.
